What are your service choices?
Though a funeral director is often your first contact and guide these are a few of your options that might help you decide how to proceed.
- Memorial Service at funeral home followed by burial and graveside service. Most often a cemetery burial is for the casket, however, if the cremated remains are to be buried a graveside service is appropriate.
- Memorial Service at funeral home followed by graveside service with casket when cremation is to follow. This is a good option for those for who want the closure of a graveside service but have opted for keeping the ashes.
- Memorial Service at funeral home with or without presence of the remains. Families often provide picture boards and background music to supplement this option.
- Memorial services can also be done in any place of your choosing, with or without the cremated remains. I have done services in back yards, pool side, senior centers and living rooms; a place of meaning for the family and the loved one.
Let the funeral director know...
Funeral directors are not always aware that funeral celebrants are available in this area. Often, they will offer to call clergy. Let them know that you prefer a funeral celebrant to officiate at your service. I will work closely with the funeral director you have chosen.
What will happen? How I will proceed.
Once we make contact I will set up a time for a family meeting. During this time, I will listen to your stories, provide needed support and guidance as you start on your journey of grief, help you clarify elements of the service which will provide meaning for you such as readings, prayers, music, and other speakers. I will also make sure that I understand the faith or spiritual components you would like included.
I will then go home and set to work taking everything I have heard in order to write a eulogy that most characterizes the one who has died.
Quite often I will supplement or suggest music selections, readings and prayers that will enhance what is said,bringing broader perspective and depth to the life we honor.
If I do my job well, you will not see me. You will be "seeing" your grandparent, parent, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, friend, spouse or companion.
It is my desire that this be a healing experience for you and your family.
